Jobs and Guilds By: Jordan Hendershot
A guild is an association of commom workers. Based on what your occupation is, you are a part of a guild. There are so many jobs in the medieval ages. Some are great, paying jobs. While other jobs are horrible and you barely get by. Here are some jobs from the Medieval Times.
Farmers:
  • Farmers are depended on by the whole town because they are the ones to produce most of the food.
Knights:






  • Can rule lands, take part in battles and tournaments like the joust
  • Had to wear lots of armor to protect themselves like chain mail and huge helmets that weigh six to eleven pounds
  • Knights protected the King and the Kingdom in return for pieces of land.

Squire:






  • A squire ages from about 14-15
  • A squire is the last stage until knight hood where they begin serious training for fighting
  • Squires have to do a lot of things for their lord like hold their horse while they're fighting, deliver confidential messages, keep his house keys, and even dress him.

Pope:






  • Leaders in the matter of faith like what are the proper beliefs. Also, he can lead a big organization and working to make the town a better place to live.
  • You can only become the pope if you came from a good family, had to have been a cardinal, and have been a great priest.
  • Being the pope is a life time job, so the pope can only be replaced if the old pope dies.
Goldsmith:






  • Some goldsmiths have to find all of their gold,but it's easier to buy ore from a miner.
  • The goldsmiths make more money if they dig the gold up themselves and they don't have to test it for purity.
  • In order to make gold plates, gold screens, or gold necklaces, the goldsmiths beat the gold into sheets.
Philosopher:






  • Philososphers like to spend their time thinking and writing
  • Some philosophers become teachers like Thomas Aquinas who taught at the University in Paris
  • Some ideas for European Christianity were borrowed from Medieval Islam and Greece.
Doctors :






  • Doctors study at a university
  • Their clothes are very fancy like a long red gown and a hood with fur. Also a belt with silver thread is common.
  • To make a diagnosis, doctors look at their patients astrology chart. Examine general health, mental attitude, and study their diet.
  • Women could be doctors, but there weren't any in England.
  • The greatest woman doctor was Dr. Trotula. She wrote a text book that was used for a long time after she died in 1097.
